Family photography at an east texas ranch

Savannah’s Extended Family

This extended family session was originally planned as a birthday gift. Savannah wanted to give her mother something meaningful: photographs of the people she loves most gathered together in this particular season of life.

Like many families, they had concerns before the session began. Would the children cooperate? Would everyone actually enjoy being there? Could we create the photographs they hoped for without forcing smiles or exhausting everyone involved?

In reality, family sessions rarely unfold exactly as planned, and I don’t believe they should.

Formal portraits matter. They become the photographs framed on walls and tucked into albums for generations to come. However, the moments I find myself returning to most often are the ones in between. Little hands instinctively reaching for parents, shy smiles turning into laughter, and playful energy adults often apologize for make up the very heart of this season.

This family reminded me of that truth.

As is often the case, it took everyone a little while to settle in. Yet once the pressure of “getting the photo” faded and the formal portraits were behind us, the entire session softened. Some of my favorite moments happened as everyone wandered through the front yard together, children weaving between parents and grandparents as they walked through the gate. On the surface, nothing extraordinary was happening. Even so, these are exactly the kinds of memories that quietly disappear before we realize they’re gone.

I wish more parents understood that the chaos isn’t getting in the way of the photographs.

It is the photograph.

Real personalities matter more than perfect cooperation. Children don’t always want to be put down. Some hide behind their parents before peeking out with a grin. Others laugh a little too loudly or cling tightly to the people they trust most. None of it annoys me, and none of it needs correcting. Instead, these details tell the truth about what life looked like during this season.

When families trust the process and let go of the expectation that everyone needs to say “cheese” at exactly the same moment, something beautiful happens. The session shifts from performance to preservation.

Years from now, I don’t believe you’ll miss the perfectly posed smile. Rather, you’ll miss the little hand reaching up for yours. You’ll remember the squeals of delight when your children swung through the air and the tears that came when they wanted to be held. Most of all, you’ll remember how perfectly they fit against your hip.

Family photography in East Texas isn’t simply about documenting what your family looked like.

It’s about remembering what it felt like to love them in this season before everything changes once again.
